We’re sharing our favorite opportunities to see alligators both in their wild natural habitat and enjoying some Orlando fun while seeing alligators. Whether you’re an adrenaline-seeker or prefer a controlled environment, this guide will help you plan your gator encounter while visiting Orlando.
In the Wild: Witnessing the Majesty of Alligators
For the truly adventurous, seeing alligators in the wild is an unforgettable experience. These three spots are just north of Orlando and provide fantastic opportunities (almost guaranteed!) to see alligators in their natural habitat.
And all three of these locations will deliver on giving you a beautiful “real Florida” experience. Lake Jesup is a 45 minute drive from the Walt Disney World Resort and these three spots offer great alligator viewing opportunities:
- Lake Jesup: Nicknamed “Gatorland,” Lake Jesup boasts the highest concentration of alligators in North America! Take a guided airboat tour to see these giants basking in the sun or gliding through the water.
- Wekiwa River: Kayak or canoe down the scenic Wekiwa River and keep your eyes peeled for alligators lurking along the banks. Remember, stay in your boat and maintain a safe distance.
- Black Hammock Wilderness Area: Hike or bike through this cypress swamp and observe alligators in their natural environment. Be sure to stay on designated trails and respect wildlife.
Important Safety Tips:
- Always follow posted signs and warnings (but even if there’s no sign, if it’s water, assume there could be alligators!)
- Maintain a safe distance from alligators (remember: they are wild animals and can be dangerous!)
- Never feed alligators (this can habituate them to humans and lead to aggressive behavior!)
