Ghosts of Key West and Haunted Ghost Tours

Key West is bright, colorful, tropical, and full of sunshine — but after dark, the island takes on a completely different personality.

Behind the pastel cottages, old wooden porches, historic cemeteries, shipwreck stories, and candlelit streets, Key West has built a reputation as one of the most haunted places in Florida. From cursed dolls and ghostly women to haunted mansions and eerie old jail cells, the island has more than enough stories to keep a ghost tour busy.

Whether you’re visiting for the history, the hauntings, or just a fun night out after sunset, Key West is one of the best places in Florida to add a ghost tour to your trip itinerary.

3 Most Popular Key West Ghost Stories

The Lady in Blue

The Lady in Blue is of the most popular spectral presences in Key West, haunting one of the most popular places to hang out on the island:  Captain Tony’s Saloon.

Located in the heart of the fun, Captain Tony’s Saloon is just off Duval Street (on Green Street) near the famous Mallory Square sunset celebration and included in most of Key West’s ghost tours.

Without giving away the history (assuming you’re going to want to take the ghost tour to learn more), let’s just say… this location has a pretty creepy past!

Inside the saloon when you visit, you’ll immediately notice a HUGE TREE growing in the middle of the bar and up through the roof. It’s been there for a very long time, and has a dark past! Make sure to read the gravestone at its base.

The Legend of Robert the Doll

Do you dare visit Fort East Martello at night? Here, encased in a glass display, lives Robert the Doll. This legend goes back decades, and has been mentioned on podcasts and TV shows like Joe Rogan, the History Channel and even on the Travel Channel!

Robert is a cursed doll, and anyone who doesn’t show respect… well… encounters great misfortune in their life. The Key West Ghost Tours will share the many unexplained occurrences surrounding Robert the Doll, and the history of how this ghost story came to be.

Here’s information on how to visit Robert the Doll, and the ghost tour that will share all the history and paranormal stories: Ghost Key West

The Old Monroe County Jail

For many decades, visitors to the Old Monroe County Jail have reported hearing unexplained voices and unsettling noises. Key West was considered a big city back in the 1800s and went through lots of tumultuous times. Within all that history, the county jail surely housed some interesting characters, right?

The jail is now a museum, and open to the public to visit. It’s also part of some Key West Ghost Tour fun! Here’s a local article talking about the history of the Old Monroe County Jail, here.

Hemingway's Ghostly House

Ernest Hemingway’s iconic Key West home is the subject of some speculative paranormal activity involving… Hemingway himself!

It is located at 907 Whitehead Street in Old Town Key West, and ghost tour companies often include the home or surrounding area in their haunted storytelling.

People over the years have reported seeing the ghostly figures of Hemingway and his wife Pauline, hearing the loud clicks of the old typewriter in his study, footsteps and feeling an overall eerie presence.

There’s a growing list of paranormal experiences at this property. If you’re gonna visit Key West, definitely visit the Hemingway House and Museum, at least during the day when you’re safe from the frightening sights of wandering specters.

Ghosts of Key West... Must-Do Tours!

A Key West ghost tour is one of the easiest (and most fun) ways to experience the island after dark.

Instead of just walking past old buildings and wondering what happened there, a ghost tour gives you the stories behind the streets: the haunted homes, the cemetery legends, the strange objects, the tragic tales, and the local folklore that makes Key West feel a little more mysterious.

Depending on the tour, you may find options focused on:

  • Haunted history walking tours
  • Robert the Doll and Fort East Martello experiences
  • Old Town ghost tours
  • Cemetery stories
  • Pub-style haunted tours
  • Family-friendly spooky tours
  • More intense paranormal-style experiences

Several tour companies offer haunted Key West experiences, including tours tied to Robert the Doll and Fort East Martello, where some experiences include time at the Civil War-era fort and a guided Robert-focused portion.

When choosing a tour, think about the kind of night you want.

If you’re traveling with family, choose a lighter ghost tour with more history and storytelling. If you’re traveling as a couple or with friends, a nighttime walking tour or haunted pub-style tour may be more fun.

If Robert the Doll is your main reason for visiting, look specifically for tours or museum experiences that include Fort East Martello.

Best Walking and Trolley Key West Ghost Tours

Walking ghost tours are lots of fun in Key West! Here’s our favorite walking ghost tour where you’ll learn all about paranormal activities and legends… Key West Ghost & Mysteries Tour.

Trolley ghost tours are also lots of fun and cover more “paranormal activity” reported sites than the walking tours can cover.

TIP: Get a day/night trolley tour pass!  Use the trolley to jump on and off throughout the day while sightseeing the island, then jump back on at night for the ghost tour! Here’s more information on the Graves and Gravestones Trolley Tours

Where to Stay

Where you stay can make a big difference! Staying in Old Town Key West  makes it easier to explore all the most popular sites, plus catch the sunsets at Mallory Square and get to a ghost tour after dark.

There are lots of places to stay all within walking distance of most of the fun, but availability and pricing shifts a lot depending on when you plan to go!

Use a tool like this Expedia one here to plug in different dates and locations to see when and where you want to stay, how much it’ll cost with tax and fees (Expedia includes it in the amount they provide).

I recommend starting your search by looking at “Old Town Key West” hotels, which will all be within walking distance of the most fun (including trolleys and ghost tours).

Try to stay as close to Mallory Square and the Sunset Pier as you can get, that’s my recommendation – especially if it’s your first trip to Key West. In the Expedia tool above, use the filter on the left side to find all hotels near Mallory Square (my recommendation for the most walkable vacation).

You’ll be located at ground zero of the most walkable area to the best sunsets and the traditional Mallory Square at Sunset fun. You’ll be a quick few steps away from The Shipwreck Museum, Key West Aquarium, food, bars, shopping and the trolleys and ghost tours. And there you can catch a boating, jet ski, snorkeling excursion all in this area as well.

Check out the Hyatt and Ocean Key Resort, both exceptional hotels and are oceanfront and steps to Mallory Square, Duval Street and all the fun.

If you’re looking for all the Key West fun but also want the most unique, luxury island vacation… check out the Sunset Key Cottages, located on a private island just 7 minutes on ferry from For a more memorable splurge, look for a waterfront resort with amenities like a top-rated spa,

This is the kind of stay to choose if you want beautiful views, resort amenities, a pool, sunset access, and an easy walk to dinner and evening activities.

Best for: romantic trips, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, luxury weekends, and travelers who want the full Key West experience.

Tip: If you’re visiting during a busy season, book your hotel and ghost tour ahead of time. Key West is small, walkable, and popular — and the most convenient places to stay can fill up quickly.

Final Thoughts Planning Your Haunted Key West Visit

If you’re planning to explore the ghosts of Key West, give yourself enough time to enjoy both sides of the island: the sunny tropical version and the haunted after-dark version.

A good haunted Key West day could look something like this:

  • Spend the morning exploring Old Town, visiting the Hemingway Home, or stopping by Fort East Martello to see Robert the Doll
  • In the afternoon, cool off at your hotel, browse shops, or grab an early dinner
  • Then head to Mallory Square for the famous Sunset Celebration before your ghost tour begins

Mallory Square’s Sunset Celebration begins before sunset and is one of Key West’s signature experiences, with performers, artists, vendors, and crowds gathering to watch the sun drop toward the Gulf of Mexico.

A few tips before you go:

  • Make ghost tour reservations ahead of time, especially during busy travel seasons.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes because Old Town streets and sidewalks can be uneven.
  • Bring a small bottle of water, especially in warm months.
  • Pack a light layer if you’ll be indoors, on a trolley, or out late.
  • Carry a small umbrella or poncho during rainy season.
  • Charge your phone before the tour for photos, maps, and reservations.
  • Leave time for Mallory Square at sunset before your nighttime plans.
  • Check tour details carefully so you know whether it is a walking tour, trolley tour, museum visit, or adults-only experience.

Key West is already one of Florida’s most memorable destinations. Add a few ghost stories, a haunted tour, and a sunset at Mallory Square, and you have the perfect mix of tropical vacation and spooky island adventure.
