Where is Key West NAS Sigsbee?

NAS Sigsbee is actually it’s own island on the northern edge of Key West. The main gate is located between two resorts, and once you pass security there’s a long land bridge that takes you to the Sigbee’s housing, lodging and camping areas.

This location is considered “New Town” where residents live and work. To get to the touristy, fun part of Key West you’ll need to keep going west past Sigsbee.

It’s a little too far out to walk from Sigsbee into the Old Town part of Key West where most of the fun is. So consider bringing or renting a bike or  moped.

Driving into Old Town works too, but be prepared for some parking challenges. There are a few parking lots but certain times of the day can be hard to find available parking.

What's at NAS Sigsbee?

There’s a commissary, basketball court, playground, over 90 full hook-up RV sites, hundreds of tent camping sites, boat ramps and a marina and bait/convenience shop. There are laundry machines, restrooms with hot showers, soda machines too, and all located right on the ocean!

Whether you have a pop-up camper or a big RV, sites are big enough to park your car or golf car along side. The park is super clean and yes, there is wifi.

There’s supposedly a lounge with full bar near the campground as well, but we can’t report we’ve seen it first hand.

The campground is huge, and it’s oceanfront!

The restroom facilities are fairly primitive but just fine. There IS hot water, multiple shower stalls, mirrors and electrical outlets (for hair dryers and cell phone charging if you’re tent camping!).

There are also washing machines and dryers AND a voluntary book library.

Entering Sigsbee

It’s a military base. Just like all others, you need a military ID and military privileges to secure reservations and access. Security is very strict. They’ll do the background checks and they’ll need your ID and car info.

There are certain times of year where this location is particularly popular. Lots of retirees have a tradition of meeting up here each year, with an especially active RV community.

If you’re active military, you can make reservations further in advance (up to one year, at the time this blog is being typed). Those not active can reserve their spots up to 6 months in advance (but this may change so check the NAS website.

Official NAS Key West MWR website for details and current info.

NAS Sigsbee Camping Tips

If you plan to stay at Sigsbee for tent camping, you may want to avoid June thru September because of the heat and mosquitoes. The tent camping spaces have big mega Australian Pines that offer some shade, but inside your tent will still be sweltering during the day (we know, we’ve experienced this in early June).

The campground is right on the water and there’s quite a bit of very natural Florida marshy and wooded area on the island, which the mosquitoes thrive in. There are also lots of big iguanas in the mangroves, which we think are very cool.

But if anyone in your party doesn’t like mosquitoes, extreme heat or large iguanas, you may want to consider an RV instead, or camping during winter months.

Make sure when you’re visiting Key West, to visit the Key West Truman Annex. There’s an Eco-Discovery Center, Fort Zachary Taylor historical landmark and beautiful beach plus nature trails and the Key West Truman Annex NAS (for all you military folks!).

And remember to use your military ID for discounts! Key West is a very military-friendly place, and saving money with your discounts means even more fun to be had!
