Koreshan State Park in Southwest Florida
Koreshan State Park in Southwest Florida is a historical site that dates back over a century! This 200 acre park has lots to do and explore, and everyone in the family will find something fun and interesting. This Florida State park is a hidden gem, well worth visiting.Â
It’s located in Estero, right near Naples and Ft. Myers. We stumbled upon this park when we were visiting Florida Gulf Coast University – it’s about a 10 minute drive, and makes a great half day adventure.
There are lots of great things we found happening in this park:
Museum and Historical Site Buildings
With entry to the park (currently $5 per car), you’ll snake your way on a windy road over to a (free) parking area. Walk the path and you’ll get to the historical buildings part of this park. There are conveniently located bathrooms right before you start your walk through this area.Â
There are lots of beautifully preserved buildings and structures, as well as gardens. It’s fairly shady and the walk is pleasant. Each building is full of fascinating history, and you can explore meticulously preserved artifacts, photographs, and exhibits that offer insight into the utopian community founded by Cyrus Teed in the late 19th century.
Koreshan Unity was an innovative pioneer group that settled on this land in 1893 with the intention of building a communal community based on celibacy, equality, hard work, and religion.
If their religion sounds a little unorthodox, it was indeed also considered unorthodox back then!
Locally, they were often considered to be more like a cult. Whether it was their desire to keep to themselves, or how they were perceived by those outside their community… they did indeed keep to themselves in large part, and over many years.
Take a self-guided tour or wait for one of the park’s scheduled tours for a more in-depth historical immersion into how this group lived.
Interactive exhibits, like the blacksmith, show you how these community members really lived in this small but advanced community.
Kayaking and Canoeing
In addition to the history preserved in this park there’s also a lot of nature and wildlife to explore. One of the ways to see it is up close in a kayak or canoe!
There are no rentals available at the park, so you’ll need to bring your own.Â
There is a boat launch and park visitors are free to bring their watercraft and use the boat ramp.
If you’re an avid paddler, 3 miles is nothing. In just a short time from launching at of Koreshan State Park you’ll be in Estero Bay. Here, you’ll be surrounded by tons of tiny islands, lots more wildlife and Mound Key Archeological State Park (an island only accessible by boat).
There is FASCINATING HISTORY about the Calusa Indians surrounding Mound Key and this whole area, and it’s sitting right there down the canal from Koreshan.Â
If you like Florida history, and want to learn things you likely have never heard before… check out this book Missions to the Calusa (Florida Museum of Natural History: Ripley P. Bullen Series) on Amazon here. If you haven’t read about the Calusa, you might be amazed – I was!
Mound Key is worth the visit. It’s only accessible by boat, so not a lot of people even know it exists! There are no amenities on the island but it’s open to the public and has self-guided interpretive trails.
History here goes back thousands of years where the Calusa Indians are believed to have built these 30 foot tall shell mounds.
Koreshan State Park offers one of the best (only) ways to get to Mound Key. And, Friends of Koreshan State Park are large contributors to helping Mound Key preserve this important history, see here.
