Wynwood Walls Miami

Wynwood Walls: Miami's premiere artist community

One of Miami’s increasingly popular top attractions are the Wynwood Walls, an outdoor art museum of sorts, located next to the Design District and Midtown Miami neighborhoods.

Artists from all over the world come to the Wynwood neighborhood in the heart of Miami to put their art up on a wall for the world to see. And it’s free to walk around and visit this cultural phenomenon.

These Wynwood Walls are on local businesses, apartments, and restaurants. The art pieces are vibrant, large, and detailed, some small and some are massive. There are lots of really cool optical illusion type pieces as well. And these pieces change fairly often, so every visit could show you a new art piece.

How the Wynwood Walls started

These Wynwood Walls have a short history, having only started in 2009. The area was neglected and a sore spot in Miami. Real estate developer and art lover Tony Goldman envisioned revitalization by art. The goal that Tony Goldman had was to convert a failing warehouse neighborhood into “an outdoor museum of international street art”.

One of the coolest things about this area is that many of the old warehouses are still standing and are now beautiful art exhibits and shops

Art Basel in Miami: December 1-3 in 2022

2012 was the first time that Art Basel came to Miami Beach and Wynwood, one of the most celebrated international art exhibitions. And it has returned every year since. This year’s exhibition will be December 1-3 2022. You’ll find exhibits featuring all forms of art, including photography and film, street art, sculptures, paintings of all media, interactive art and more. There will also be panels featuring artists, collectors, critics, and other prominent members of the art world.

Visiting the Wynwood Walls

A visit to this international landmark is completely free! The only thing you might need to spend a little money on is an uber or parking. There are also a ton of bars and restaurants with top-notch cuisine and mixologists who are ready to create food and alcohol art for you. Check out the Wynwood Walls website for public and private tours, admission to exclusive murals, and events like Yoga in the Garden.

Wynwood is a local hotspot for a relaxing day of brunching, exploring, and photography moments. I recommend checking out the Original Selfie Museum, and Fun Dimension.

Since the neighborhood is incredibly pedestrian-friendly, you can walk to every bar, restaurant, shop and museum.

This creative-centric neighborhood is also where the locals love to go at night to see drag shows, live musical performance, eat dinner, and go drinking and dancing. A few of my favorite spots for a night out are GrampsShots, and Dirty Rabbit.

Keep in mind that Wynwood is a VERY popular area and it can get crowded on weekends. If you plan on going out, make sure you get there early so you can skip the lines and get a good seat, or have a good plan if you want to do a little bar hopping.

Wynwood Art Walk, Second Saturdays!

The BEST time to visit is for the Wynwood Art Walk, hosted on the second Saturday of every month. The day is full of tours, photos, and sight-seeing.

With the setting of the sun comes the beginning of the party that goes long into the night. You’ll experience food trucks, galleries and shops open late, live performances – its truly a one-of-a-kind night-time street art festival.
