Ikea Socker Greenhouse Hack!

Want to grow your own food, but not sure how to start? Whether you have a lack of space, or a lack of knowledge, just start growing something! Food prices are continuing to rise, and fresh foods from your own garden are healthy and available!

An easy way to start is with a small indoor countertop greenhouse. It’s a great way to grow your own fresh herbs like oregano, thyme, basil. Or grow microgreens for you and your pets! Another great way to use a small countertop greenhouse is to start seeds indoors, which you plan to grow in a container or garden when the plants get big enough.

The Ikea Socker Greenhouse is currently just $21.99. We’ve looked, and there are very few countertop greenhouses that are this inexpensive. If you don’t have an Ikea near you, you can find them online through Amazon for a few more dollars. This small greenhouse can be easily converted to a seed or small plantling incubator by adding grow lights. It’s easy to assemble, and the full greenhouse hack can be done for under $35!

Ikea Socker Greenhouse Hack with growlights to grow herbs indoors on a kitchen countertop

Indoor Countertop Greenhouse!

We had a dark, unused countertop corner in our kitchen that was completely wasted space.

We decided to put our Ikea Socker Greenhouse Hack in this space.

And it completely transformed the space, brightened it up (grow lights!) and now we love harvesting fresh oregano, thyme for cooking and watching tomato and pepper seeds sprout.

Best things to grow in an Ikea Socker Greenhouse Hack? Herbs, microgreens, and start seeds for growth jump start to a container and backyard garden.

Ikea Socker Assembly is super easy!

1. Separate parts from box

2. Base + front and back panels

3. Metal bar connecting front, back panels

4. Slide side/top panels into sides

5. When sliding sides, easier with 2 people

6. No tools needed!

Add Growlights!

Growlights are inexpensive and most often come with automatic timers. Brighten up a countertop or dark corner in your kitchen. Put this awesome little greenhouse in your family room or on a patio!

Growlights come in different shapes and sizes, our favorite are the 2-piece strips that come with an auto timer. These 2 light sets come with the auto timer, plug, plus 3 ways to install: adhesive strips, screws or use the 6 cable ties all included. Usually they come with an adhesive strip, but for this Ikea Socker hack, we used able ties to hang the strips from the top metal bar.

2 Growlight Set with Auto Timer
2 Growlights Hung from Top Bar
2 Growlight Strip Set less than $15
Use Cable Ties (usually included)
3 Cable Ties to Hang Each Strip
This way to easily shift on bar

This Ikea Socker Greenhouse Hack works really great for growing your own herbs like basil, mint, thyme, cilantro. But what it does BEST… is starting seeds indoors! We just planted some radishes, and they germinated in 48 hours! We’ve planted lots of microgreens for our hermit crab pets and they’re ready in 7 days after planting.

This little countertop greenhouse holds about 15 small 2 oz. plastic cups. These cups make starting seeds indoors SUPER EASY!

Looking for high quality seeds to grow microgreens, herbs, vegetables? We usually purchase from SeedsNow because we’ve had excellent germination results. But ALSO the SeedsNow website lets you search for what grows in your hardiness zone (not all types of plants grow in all areas!). Their website is much easier to use than most others, especially when searching for what types of vegetables, food, herbs will grow in your backyard climate. Make sure, for your outdoor gardening, that you stick to what grows in YOUR particular hardiness zone!
